Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITB syndrome)

This is a problem that normally presents as pain on the outside of the leg that can go from just below the knee all the way up to the hip.  Common to runners, it usually becomes noticeable about a mile or two into a run.

To properly treat the problem, the cause must first be ascertained.  Over-pronation of the foot, gait problems, and running on uneven surfaces can all be possible causes.  Over-pronation problems usually need to be corrected with a custom orthotic.  Proper treatment with Active Release Technique, kinesiotaping, and home stretching exercises specifically for the IT-band can resolve the problem.
