Football
Hailed
by many as America’s true past-time, football has risen to popularity
levels that would have been unthinkable in the days of George Halas.
From Pee-wee leagues to the mind-boggling speed at the professional
level, the demands placed on the football athlete continue to rise.
The
physical nature and speed of the sport make an enormous variety
of injuries common. Contusions,
ligament
sprains (especially of the lateral
ankle), and muscle/tendon
strains are seen very often. Knee injuries including
meniscal
tears and tearing
of the cruciate ligaments occur due to the extreme shear
forces placed on the joint. Commonly in football, quick changes
in direction or a collision directly to the joint are to blame.
Other common injuries include separated
shoulders, joint
dislocations, and concussions.
